Winners of the Black Entertainment & Comedy Award (BECA) from 1999 – 2006

This inaugural show was first held in September 1999 at the Stratford Town Hall – East London.

Why BECA – Black Entertainment Comedy Awards
Black comedians have been making an impact in British society both on screen and off and they are currently involved in various aspects of comedy entertainment from script writing to theatre to stand-up performances as seen in Vagina Monologues (Angie le Mar and Gina Yashere) in historic Television shows like the BBC’s The Real McCoy, Blouse and Skirt, The Lenny Henry Show, The A-Force and The Crouches, Channel 4’s No Problem, Desmond’s, The Posse. ITV’s The Fosters and 291 Club and more recently in 3 non blondes and Little Miss Jocelyn

There was also a dedicated black comedy circuit that operated across the UK on a weekly basis and often attracts a multicultural audience.

BECA was born out of the need to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions made by Black British comedy talent and as the UK’s only official Black Comedy Awards it has, since 1999, given recognition to Black comedians both past and present for their achievements.

BECA was important in supporting and encouraging others and used the annual event as a platform to show case and support up and coming Black comedians as well as giving to charity.

BECA wasan awards evening and it fused comedy, music and an awards presentation to create a gala event and engages the public in choosing comedians to nominate as well as voting for the award winners.
